Konu: Orhan Gencebay, Müzeyyen Senar, Sezen Aksu, Mercan Dede gibi müziğimizin büyük ustalarının katkılarıyla medeniyetlerin buluşma noktası İstanbul’u, onun müziğini ve hüznünü başarıyla yansıtan görülmesi gereken bir çalışma… Alexander Hacke adındaki Alman müzisyen kültür karmasının yansıdığı müzik türlerini anlamak ve şehirdeki ahenkli tınlamaları kaydetmek için, hiç Türkçe bilmediği halde, İstanbul'a gelir. Burada Selim Sesler'le tanışır. Aralarındaki diyaloglar müzik diliyle gelişmeye başlar. Ardından bir çok müzisyen ve şarkıcı onların bu serüvenine katılır ve ortaya İstanbul'un çok sesli korosu çıkar. Tarzların farklılığı ortak amaçlarının en birleştirici özelliği oluverir. Hedefleri, İstanbul'un şarkısını yapmaktır. Belgeseli Altın Ayı ödüllü yönetmen Fatih Akın çekti. Synopsis: A beautiful documentary that succeeds in accurately conveying the music and melancholy of Istanbul, the crossroads of civilization, with the help of famous Turkish musicians like Orhan Gencebay, Müzeyyen Senar, Sezen Aksu, and Mercan Dede. A German bass guitar player by the name of Alexander Hacke comes to Istanbul to understand and appreciate the various kinds of music that reflect the city's unique cultural makeup, and to record these harmonious sounds. It is here that he meets Selim Sesler, and the language of music soon takes over. Many musicians and singers subsequently join them on their musical journey and the many voices of the choir that is Istanbul emerge beautifully. Their different styles become the unifying thread in their common quest: to compose Istanbul's song. Produced by award-winning Turkish-German director Fatih Akın. Spanning a wide range of musical styles from Orhan Gencebay to Mercan Dede, this documentary is a feast for the eyes and ears.

Time:       Saturday November 18, 7:00-9:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30pm  (Nobody will be allowed inside after 7:00pm.)

Suggested Donation:       $6 for general public, $4 for members, $3 for students.

Directions: From I-5, take the La Jolla Village Dr. exit and head west. Turn right onto Villa La Jolla Dr. When you get to the T-intersection at the end of the road, you'll be in front of the Gilman parking structure. Center Hall is two blocks west of the Gilman Parking Structure. On weekends you can park on any of the surface lots as well, provided there are no signs indicating a permit is required seven days a week (rare). Please see the following map for detailed directions. Center Hall is building 984 on the map.
